As an artist wanting to make a living selling my artwork online. I had to learn about business, SEO, social media and trends.
I did what every online artist and craftsperson does and started an Etsy page. That was mildly successful. Profitable, but not enough to make a living. It was most definitely a great learning platform and helped me identify what medium I wanted to establish as my niche.
Offline, I sell my copper artwork and jewelry to art galleries and specialty shops with great results. My crochet business did well with other artists and scientists who liked my no-pattern approach. But I still wanted a thriving online business.
I had it in my head that I wanted to make money in my sleep. But how?
Selling online means creating a product/artwork, taking good photographs, writing about it, marketing it, social media, and SEO. Then when I make a sale, I have to package the product up and head to the post office. Unless I sleep walk, I wasn't making money in my sleep. So much thought went into this that I was overwhelmed.
The approach I take to over-thinking is to walk away for a while, stop thinking, put on the kettle and crochet.
One day while learning a new crochet stitch, I started writing the pattern down on paper. I'm known for being the Crochet Hooker who never uses patterns as a part of my in-the-moment approach, so documenting my new patterns was completely foreign. At the same time, friends where asking me to crochet items for them. Instead of making items, I wrote down simple patterns and gave them away. Then the thought came to me, "Do people buy unique crochet patterns online?"
YES! They do!
I found this hidden market where I can create something unique, write the pattern, make a pdf and sell it online, in my sleep. I don't have to go to the post office. I get to make money from a hobby. And I get to teach, which is really my passion!
Because I can sell the same pattern several times, I can keep the cost low. [$2.50 - $4.50 for most patterns]
I'm at the point where I am starting to work with other Crochet Hookers who can write a unique pattern and make a pdf file. They benefit from my established business and contacts and I get to add new patterns which helps my SEO. It's a win / win situation. I'm always looking for new Crochet Hookers who also want to make money in their sleep, so email me: SandraGloverClarke@LIVE.com and we'll chat!
As I said before, it's a giggle. A laugh even. Yup. I'm laughing all the way to the bank.
